When the sun is scorching, nothing can beat an outdoor pool, and ours is heated too, so can be enjoyed whatever the weather. 

With its own bar, beach hut changing rooms and plenty of loungers, the pool is the perfect place to soak up the sun and enjoy magnificent views of the North Wessex Downs.

A wander around the grounds at The Retreat will reveal ancient trees providing shade from the summer sun, a 200 year old walled garden, a boules pitch and croquet lawn, a children's play area, plenty of secluded spots and of course those stunning views across the North Wessex Downs.

Indulge in exceptional pan-Asian fine dining in our gorgeous Yu restaurant, or weather permitting, in the courtyard.  

With its woven fans, bamboo-style framed mirrors and warm lighting, our pan-Asian restaurant Yu is the perfect space to switch off and indulge yourself, with a relaxed fine-dining experience. 

From sushi to Japanese-style tapas and Asian main courses and desserts, Yu is an experience not to be missed.

Sushi platters are also available to take home.

The Atlas Room is The Retreat's beautiful, atmospheric lounge, and takes you back to the golden age of travel and leisure, with it's comfy sofas, board games and vintage travel-inspired art. Enjoy a light lunch from 12-5pm, or relax in the evening with a few drinks.

The Atlas Room is open to both residents and locals, is dog-friendly, and feels a world away...

Pop in to The Courtyard, home to our Lay & Wheeler Wine Cellar and TV Chef Clodagh McKenna's Signature Store. 

During the day you can enjoy coffee and cakes from Clodagh's shop, or a drink from our own bar, and weather permitting, our Yu pan-Asian menu at lunchtime.

Exton Park is nestled in the South Downs, occupying some of the best vineyard real-estate the south of England has to offer. They make sparkling wines of great quality and individuality, served at some of the top establishments in the UK, including L’Enclume, Soho House, Chewton Glen, and of course, The Retreat and it's sister hotels. 

We will have the privilege of enjoying all five of the Exton Park cuvées, beautifully paired with specially created seasonal dishes from our Head Chef, Matt Edmonds. This will be a truly decadent and memorable evening.

What better way to mark Midsummer than celebrating the very best of England.

Spend the morning learning all about English sparkling wine – how and why it has come to prominence and the all-important techniques that make the style. We’ll compare with Champagne and other great sparkling wines of the world, gaining a deeper understanding of wine in general and what makes one different from another.

You’ll then enjoy a two-course lunch at The Retreat before we head to our local award-winning vineyard, Winding Wood. We’ll enjoy a private tour and tasting hosted by owner and vigneron, Christopher Cooke, who will share the story (and wines!) of this very special spot.

The day ends with a return to the Retreat.

As the temperature rises, we all look to the pink stuff for ultimate refreshment - rosé has truly become part of the summer experience in the UK. Provence wears the crown for popularity (we’ve come a long way since Mateus!) but beyond the classic pale style there are many excellent wines to be discovered.

Looking at a range of styles from entry level to super premium, this is a great opportunity to understand this category a little better whilst enjoying a few glasses on a summers evening.

A closer look at the idea of blind tasting; is it all myth, bias, hyperbole? It is certainly taken seriously by wine experts the world over, playing a key part in the hardest exams in the industry, but how much are influenced by what we see, hear, or feel?

This will be a light-hearted evening exploring the idea of bias and judgement when it comes to our palates. Who knows, you could be an Master of Wine in the making!

Wine grapes originated in Europe, but when those same grapes cross continents and oceans they break free from the rules that govern so much of ‘Old World’ wine.

While Burgundy and Bordeaux still occupy the hearts of many, pioneering attitudes (and cheaper land prices!) in the Southern Hemisphere mean that doppelgängers of these styles can often be found at better value, and, better quality.

Not only a great mimic, the south is home to a host of unique grape varieties preserved by an isolated history.  

In this session, we’ll explore  - and taste - what makes wines of the southern continents so special. From old classics to recent discoveries, there is a whole new world out there…
